Turn the Page: When Calls the Heart Season 9 Episode Review
Oh wow. Oh, wow, oh, wow.... What on earth just happened?
Hey Hearties, and welcome to this week's blog post! I hope your week has been amazing so far and that you're doing well. I also hope you enjoyed this week's episode of WCTH, because I sure did.
Yes!!! Yes, yes, yes! This episode was great for multiple reasons. Lucas and Elizabeth both had plotlines, and had a nice amount of screen time. Then there was such a fun mixture of humor, romance, intrigue, drama and mystery! This episode made me laugh, swoon, and curious about a couple of things.
Well, I won't waste anymore time with small talk. Let's get right to it!
Side Notes:
Gustave is Lucas' cousin?!? That is hilarious, and such a fun new detail.
I didn't give Henry a section as he didn't have too much stuff going on, but it is interesting that he's thinking about the name of the oil company. I'm also curious if he will stay on with the company as well. I'm thinking he will.
Nathan & Mei
Oh, no... Lol! Oh, Nathan... Somebody just can't avoid love triangles, can they? 😂 Oh, my goodness you guys. Nathan is stuck in ANOTHER love triangle, and the thing is... He doesn't even know it yet! But what's funny is he's the one being fought over this time. Yes, sir, this time he's the pined over subject of affection. And the ones pining after him? Mei and Faith. Ugh... Faith.... Yeah, I'll cover my thoughts on her in the next topic, and I'll talk about Mei in just a moment, but for now I'm focusing on Nathan.
Once again, Nathan has brightened my day with his antics. Guys, I know I'm Team Lucas (Which I guess now I should say I'm Team LucaBeth) but honestly I really do enjoy watching both Nathan and Kevin McGarry in general. I love Kevin's sense of humor, and I just laugh at Nathan's little snarky remarks. He's acting... how do I say this... childish? And I know that can be taken the wrong way, but he really is being such a little stinker over what happened with him and Elizabeth. But it just makes me laugh is the thing. Make it out to the one that got away... I'm not looking for another courtship... And I don't have a flouted heart.... Lol! Sure buddy... Sure you're not looking for another courtship... The man is just dealing with his heartbreak in his own way, and while some people may not like it, I find it hilarious. The poor guy is also dealing with a lot right now. A head injury, a busted arm, and now Newton and he are dealing with the trauma of the accident. Nathan feels so bad over what happened, and he can't even remember what happened. I think this may play a part in his storyline as he can't remember who hit him. And I think whoever did, probably did it on purpose.
But on the bright side, a certain woman seems to have caught his eye... Deny it all you want, Constable, but you're attracted to Mei. And that could be a recipe for more heartbreak and disaster.
Guys, I don't know what to think of Mei. She's a nice person, but there is so much mystery surrounding her, and this 'husband' of hers. She calls herself 'Miss', but yet everyone says she's married. Guys, I don't know... I just don't know. I'm really going to be upset if I find out she's married, and has been flashing her lashes at Nathan. But I'm still holding out hope that perhaps she was never even married to the guy, and that she just let everyone think she was. But then again... why would she say that she's in no position to do anything if there's something between her and Nathan? I don't know. I'm also not quite convinced about her and Nathan as a couple. I need to see more of them together first, and how her and Allie get along. And I need more info on her. Stat.
Faith's Problems
Faith! Why? Why must you always have guy problems? You've almost married two different dudes, the one you still have some sort of feelings for. And now... Now you're after Nathan! WHY?!?
Honestly... How long has it been since Carson left? Has it even been a year? I guess it doesn't matter, it's just that she's already getting jealous of Mei and Nathan. She doesn't have some kind of claim on Nathan. I just... no... Just no. I have never been a fan of Faith as a character or of the idea of her and Nathan as a couple. And I still am not. So obviously seeing her fall for Nathan wouldn't go over well for me. I honestly really have my doubts however that she'll end up with Nathan. After all, it's Mei and Nathan on the cover, not Faith and Nathan. So again, I have my doubts that she'll wind up with the Mountie. But it doesn't mean I won't complain every time I see her get jealous. Lol! Honestly... That girl needs to find Mr. Right and just marry him already. :D But it was interesting that she called Carson. Does this mean she still loves him, and that there's a chance that they'll get back together? I have no idea.
But aside from her guy problems she's also facing some doctoring troubles. Surprise, surprise, a man doesn't want to get a physical by a woman doctor. Who would have guessed? I in no way blame Henry, as Faith giving him a physical, and especially back in the 1900s just doesn't feel right. Faith handled it sweetly, but I'm hoping she doesn't get too sore about the issue and is more understanding than anything. It's nothing against her doctoring. She's obviously a great doctor. It's just that Henry isn't comfortable with her giving him a physical, which is naturally something a female doctor would face in those times. I'll be curious to see how this plays out, and if she runs into any other problems.
Wyman Walden Is Back!
Finally! I wondered where that guy went. I knew from BTS pics that Wyman would be back this season in Hope Valley, and he is shaking things up as per usual. Based on what I saw in this episode, I'm going to say that he is definitely a villain, and is up to no good. I had wondered if there might be a bit of good in him somehow, and that he'd cave in the end. But now I'm thinking I may have been wrong. Yet you never know.
It's interesting that Elizabeth doesn't remember him, and kind of sweet because that means she was too focused on Lucas to remember Wyman. Lol! I really don't have too much to go on right now to make any big assumptions. I just felt I should mention the guy, and that he's back to his villainous ways. Really that guy has such a icky vibe to him. I'll be very interested to see what comes of his presence in Hope Valley, and the foundry he's in charge of building. What changes may come to Hope Valley as a result of both?
Hickam, Bill, & Molly
Wow, Hickam. Being mayor must give that guy a boost of confidence as he's really stepping up and taking charge. And of all the people he could be ordering around, he went straight for Bill Avery! Lol! Bill was absolutely blown away when Mike announced that he needed to get out of the mayor's office right away. Or by the end of the week if that worked better for him. :D Oh, Mike. You're a sweetheart. But you know what? It's good that he's taking charge, and he has every right to that office. To be honest I had my doubts about him being mayor, and I still do, but... He's proving himself to be passionate and capable so far. He really takes his duty seriously, and that is exactly what a mayor needs to do. Even if Bill doesn't like his methods. Lol!
We also got a little bit of interaction between Bill and Molly in this episode. Guys, what happened to that romance? Is it really just going to fizzle out? Or is more coming from these two as we get farther into the season? I'm not sure. But Molly definitely made me laugh this episode. "Not like a jezebel or a tart?" Lol! Oh, Molly. She always completely misunderstands a situation, overreacts and then embarrasses herself. Although... (Cough!) In my personal opinion... Molly does have a tendency to always have an eye for the new bachelors in town, and is always after a husband. Maybe she knows this and that's why she got so mad? Lol! Either way, her antics and remarks were fun.
Cooper's Doubts
And there it is, folks. Finally we've gotten to the bottom of Cooper's problem. He just doesn't understand why Angela went blind. Why wasn't it him? Why should she have to be blind? And I'm sure this is all paired with the big question... Why would God allow this to happen to his big sister? A friend suggested this could be why Cooper was acting out, and they were right. But it makes total sense, right?
His dad is a pastor, and a good person. His sister is a good person. Why would God let her go blind? And for such a young boy, it's quite the confusing and painful question. Now Minnie and Joseph have some decisions to make, and some prayers to pray as they try and help Copper. I agree with Joseph's choice not to tell Cooper that Angela went blind because a doctor chose not to treat her. He's already struggling, and hurting inside for his big sister. Learning the truth now while he's so young could plant seeds of hate in his heart. I will say I don't agree with Joseph's choice to allow Cooper to choose whether or not he goes to church. He's just too young to decide that. But I'm curious to see how Joseph and Minnie will go about helping Cooper understand why Angela went blind.
Lee & Duck Soup
Leeland Coulter... A writer... Hmm... Interesting. The poor guy is just desperate to make a difference and find a new calling in life. He's so excited to work with his wife, and try something new, but... he's still finding his way. Lol! You know I never thought about Lee being a writer, but the idea is certainly... interesting. And Rosemary seemed to think so too. :D The poor woman. She loves her husband so much, and has the hardest time telling him that his article is just a bit too bold for Hope Valley. And then she caves and publishes it anyway. I will be interested to see how this goes for both Lee and Rosemary as they try and work together. They've never really worked together like this before, and I'm sure they're going to hit some more bumps in the road.
My big questions are these: Is Lee going stay with the newspaper, and will he and Rosemary ever have a child? Is this Lee's new calling, or will he eventually find something else? Will Lee and Rosemary never become parents or is this all just a big lead up to the end where Rosemary will finally announce she's pregnant? I have no idea, and I look forward to finding out.
Elizabeth & Lucas
Oh my... I've never seen Lucas so mad in the history of WCTH. And... Janette is back!!! Okay, okay... Let me back things up.
I absolutely loved the romance between Lucas and Elizabeth this episode. Man, those two are so in love, and adorable. Everything from Lucas looking at Elizabeth adoringly as she signed copies of her book, to Lucas trying so hard to pull off her surprise party, to just how sweet and romantic they are toward each other. I loved Lucas giving her a kiss as Hickam tried to cross the street, and Elizabeth laying her head on his shoulder. You know. All the mushy stuff. Lol! So, yes, I very much enjoyed their scenes.
I also loved that they both got real plotlines this time around that weren't just about their relationship. Instead we got to see Elizabeth handle all the ups and downs of her book being published, and Lucas having some... interest plans... (More on that in a sec.) I really enjoyed Elizabeth's plotline in particular, and found it so fun to watch her and `the whole town react to her book's publication. Also, is this a coincidence or could her comments about peoples' very harsh reviews be a direct jab at all the backlash the show and actors received after the triangle? (I'll let you decide. :) Another thing that was nice to see was Lucas comforting Elizabeth for a change. Giving us that glimpse into how they'll deal with problems as a couple. He was very sweet.
It was also funny how Elizabeth brought up their talk about the little moments in life, claiming to have been thinking about it recently, meanwhile Lucas had a huge party just waiting for her down in the saloon. Lol! But honestly after watching the second episode people brought up a good point about Lucas knowing how to do both small and grand gestures. He walked Elizabeth and Little Jack home in episode 1 and brought her the paper in the morning. He also in previous seasons has opened the door for her, helped her with her coat, and has done other little things that show he doesn't in fact only show her 'grand gestures.'
Now... about that ending... Okay first I should mention his comment to Wyman Walden. Lucas tells him that Wyman strikes him as a man who knows when they might need a partner. I kind of brushed it off at first, but after that ending I now am getting the picture. And that picture has me biting my nails. Lucas appears to potentially not only know more about Wyman than he lets on, but he's going to attempt to earn the man's trust so he can bust him. AND to top it all off, somehow Janette is involved in this. The Janette from Season 6 who Lucas saved from Amos. How on earth is this woman involved with yet another money hungry bad guy? And how does Lucas know her? Who is she? I've got questions!
Oh, guys I'm already feeling the tension and things have barely begun in this plotline! What will Lucas do to earn the man's trust? How will the town feel about him having dealings with the man? How will Elizabeth feel about this? Will Lucas tell her what he's doing, or will he have to keep his plan a secret? And will Janette arrive in town and cause a ruckus? Will Elizabeth somehow find out Lucas was talking to the woman? Will she keep her word and trust Lucas no matter what?
(Breathe, Hope... Breathe...) Buckle up, Hearties, because this could prove to be quite the ride!
Overall this was a great episode. Between Elizabeth and Lucas both getting a nice amount screen time as well as their own storylines, and all the humor, drama, romance, and mystery this episode was one of the best yet. I have been impressed so far with Season 9, and John Tinker's writing. This season feels so much brighter, and lighter than Season 8. Of course part of that has to do with the absence of that pesky triangle. I'm super curious to see how things play out, and yet I'm also already stressing about it. Lol!
Thank you so much for reading! Feel free to share your thoughts on the episode below in the comments or on my Twitter page. (But please no spoilers. Thank you!) God Bless!

I have to wonder if Lucas is some sort of government agent. There was a fan fiction story recently that involved Lucas being a special agent or something. He had contacts and worked undercover regarding Walden. So far, this is beginning to look like Lucas' story is trending that direction. I agree that Lucas may know a lot more about Walden than we think. Of course, he could have had him investigated after he tried to buy the Queen Of Hearts. A mystery is afoot, and I'm looking forward to each episode uncovering the clues!
ReplyDeleteThat would be such a plot twist for sure! I'm going to assume he's not a government agent, but I have definitely considered the idea of him being a Pinkerton or something. I'm definitely looking forward to uncovering clues in each episode! God Bless!
DeleteThey've given us tension for L&E. YES!!! That ending hook is so tantalizing. I enjoy when Lucas kicks into his mystery man mode. Like you, I wonder who Janette is...why does Lucas need her help? What help could she give? Looking forward to how this plotline unfolds.
ReplyDeleteNathan's character has grown on me since season eight. And I really like his silliness way better than his sullen triangle days. It's turning out to be a fun season so far.
Thanks for another enjoyable review!
Sorry I've taken so long to get back to you! And yes! That ending was crazy! It's so fun having Lucas be involved in this mystery, and now I've got to know who this Janette is.
DeleteYes, I so enjoy Nathan's humor this season. He always makes me smile.
Thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts with me! God Bless!
I so look forward to your post and analysis. You hit on the points I loved but one thing that bugs me is that I just want to slap Nathan and his entitled attitude. I have tried to give him grace because of the accident but buddy my patience is wearing thin. I understand his snarky attitude with Lucas and Elizabeth to a point but he said himself he knew that Elizabeth’s heart has always been with Lucas. It's been months, let it go. I didn't like his attitude with Mei about Newton, or his manner and attitude with Newton for that matter. No wonder Newton wasn't having any part of it. His impatient attitude with Mei was just rude, why should she stop what she was doing just because he came in? I do give him credit for at least apologizing to her. Ok my last Nathan rant is this: you were never courting Elizabeth. In your dreams maybe but the woman never even went to dinner with you. Most of their conversations revolved around Allie. It's not her fault he was awkward and didn't follow through. Looking forward to the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the comment that Elizabeth and Nathan never courted. I thought that line was interesting in this episode.
DeleteThank you so much, Unknown! I'm so glad you enjoyed this post! I do agree that Nathan is being quite snarky. I think it's okay for a time, though very unnecessary, but if he continues to constantly jab at E then we'll have a problem. I enjoy the humor he brings, and think he's just still dealing with the heartbreak of Season 8. But yes, eventually he needs to just let it go.
DeleteHe seems different with Mei, and yes I was very glad he apologized to her, and so quickly. But I'm not sold on them yet as a couple.
And yes, Nathan and Elizabeth never courted like her and Lucas. They never even went out together. At most she considered him as a suitor, but they never dated or anything.
Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts with me! God Bless!
I enjoyed this weeks installment. It's like watching the show all over again! I agree, I'm not sure about Nathan and Faith as a couple. I think they both need someone new. And hopefully Mei meant she wasn't in any position to date Nathan because of legal trouble and not a husband. But perhaps there will be yet another triangle with Bill, Mollie and Gustave. That could be fun. A cooking contest to determine the winner.
ReplyDeleteThank you! So glad you enjoyed the post! I don't think Nathan and Faith will end up together, and I totally agree. They both need someone new. My guess is that Nathan is going to end up with Mei, but not before a lot of drama ensues due to her past. And Lol! A triangle between Bill, Gustave, and Molly would be hilarious! Fun idea!
DeleteThank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts with me! God Bless!
Hi Hope!
ReplyDeleteLong time no see- or.. comment... or something.
Ok, I have to get this off my chest-- there was never a courtship with Nathan and Elizabeth!!!!
Whew, I feel much better now.
Loved the ep and love your breakdown. I really don't have a lot to add. That kiss on the balcony was something!!
I was reminded of that scene from back in S6 where Bill said he had checked Lucas out and couldn't find anything on him (I believe it was NOLA). Should he end up as undercover- past or present- that would make more sense. And is Janette a partner? Was her husband a partner?
So many questions!!
And we have never seen Lucas so angry, frustrated- whatever you want to call it. I can't wait to see this one play out. Gonna be good.
Great blog again, thanks a bunch!!
xox smk
Hey, girl! So glad you enjoyed the post!
DeleteYes, I don't know why the characters continue to talk like E&N dated or something. The closest thing that resembled a courtship that happened between them was the fact that they both were considering each other as a suitor for a time. Elizabeth I believe did do this for a time, but again... That's not really courting. They never went out for dinner, or really any sort of outing together so... How is it that they continue to say that they courted?
(Cough!) Okay, I'll stop rambling. Lol!
Yes, I have so many questions involving Lucas and Janette! Why are they working together to catch a bad guy again? Who is Janette? The idea of her husband having been an undercover agent is a good idea. That would make more sense. And yes, we have never, ever seen Lucas so angry before! I'm anxiously awaiting to see how this plays out.
Thank you so much for reading, and the sweet comment! Hope you're having a wonderful day so far! (Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.) God Bless!
I will say i am getting annoyed at Nathan silly quips esp wrongly worded ones. He is not the one how got away lol. Also Nathan just demands and is pushy which he has been with Elizabeth last season and so on... So no wonder Mei says he needs to have some patience.
ReplyDeleteAs for Faith getting jealous that just looks like Nathan was when Elizabeth and Lucas would talk or do something together.
Loved all the balcony scenes. And how adorable both Elizabeth and Lucas are.
I so wanted to see Elizabeth gift Lucas her book with a inscription, and also hear one for Jack and LJ too.
I am here for Lucas story and the angst between Elizabeth and him. Lucas is a good guy and he is being protector.
I love reading recaps! I really enjoyed the past three episodes myself!
ReplyDeleteI agree about Mei Sou. I think the reason for her married storyline has to do with them needing to bring in a dynamic character to grab Nathan's attention to bring him to the point of healing. Her being married makes it convenient because Nathan probably cannot be in a relationship so quickly after Elizabeth. It did feel a little too early for her to ask if Nathan courted Elizabeth. As far as Faith, it didn't feel like romantic interest to me. It seemed like two characters who never interact in spite of being part of the same show/town for seasons finally have a reason to communicate since she's his doctor. It's interesting that for Nathan to be the town Constable, he has very few relationships in HV except for Bill and Elizabeth. He actually seemed a bit annoyed at the Yosts, I've yet to see him have a conversation with Molly.
What do you think?
Hi Hope
ReplyDeleteOnce more thanks for sharing your thoughts, also for the first two episodes. I did not feel like commenting then.
Ep 3 was the first episode this season that gave me the HV feeling I missed. I really like the Canfields. Minnie sure knows how to get through to Joseph and Cooper’s question why God let’s bad things happen to good people – well I am sure there are many people in this world asking themselves the exact same thing.
My biggest question does not have to do with Lucas or Janette or Mei - it has to do with Lee. I don’t know if I have missed something but – what on earth happened to his lumber business? Has he sold it? Has it ever been mentioned this season? And how does Lee have time to take on the job at the newspaper? Yes, he is looking for his calling, something he can be passionate about, but what you have does normally not simply vanish only because you are looking for something new. I mean, with Jesse gone it’s probably not the most sproductive source for storylines, but, hey, he could at least have sold it to Wyman Walden to give my mind some rest. Is that really too much to ask. Lol.
Henry also has me wondering what is going on with him. He almost seems hounded to me. I am glad to see him back and I am curious to see what will happen to Gowen Petroleum and how Henry will fare the rest of the season. Did his encounter with Faith just serve to illustrate the difficulties Faith is facing as a female doctor or will the missed check-up have dire consequences for Henry?
Nathan – I don’t know yet what to make of this new version of him. I am actually glad that he is still his old entitled, impatient self from time to time. Do I find it annoying? Yes! But at least it’s familiar – unlike this humorous side of him he has been recently sporting. At first I was like “Who are you and what have you done to the brooding, reserved Mountie.” The scenes with Mei this week and his behavior with E&L, like E left N at the altar to be with someone else, missing no chance to rub it in their faces that he was hurt, that’s good old Nathan. I feel they are doing a good job so far, adding to N’s character without changing too much, showing a way forward for E & L and N without forcing instant friendship on them.
I am so far content with the addition of Mei Sou – on the other hand Fiona, Faith and now Mei, that’s three women now in what at the time was still regarded men’s professions. Seems that the future is coming to HV in some areas faster than others, lol.
And finally E & L – they are all I dreamed they would be and more. The level of closeness they are showing with each other is so effortless and natural – so many touches, glances and smiles showing just how happy they are to be in each other’s lives.
ReplyDeleteThe scene about the party was so wonderful. One, I was glad that L came clean with E about arranging this surprise party for her, it says so much about them that he can be honest with her and tell her what he did even when he felt he had screwed up big time. E’s reaction to his confession. She immediately knew where his heart was in the whole thing and the scene turned from him consoling her to her consoling him about the surprise gone wrong. She was down – yet she was perceptive enough of L’s feelings to give some comfort in return. That is something I missed last season where E was so pre-occupied with her own feelings that she lacked her usual compassion – good to see that E is back to being herself again. Last but not least, L’s unbelieving reaction when E says she can act surprised. That’s a reaction you show when you are sure you are in someone’s good books with no fear of losing that place. They are so sure of each other now and that is such a great change from last season and such a joy to watch.
And finally, this balcony scene changed my perspective on what I perceived as an absolutely awful dialogue in the ep 2 grand gestures scene. That scene did absolutely not sit well with me for reasons already laid down by others. Meanwhile, I think the grand gestures scene says more about Elizabeth than about Lucas. Her “always” in “You don’t always have to make such grand gestures” shows that Lucas’s little gestures did not really stick with her. And I guess it makes sense, because she did not want to let Lucas into her heart and the little gestures of affection she could ignore whereas the grand ones she could not. So the grand ones are what she remembers.
