Out Like A Lamb: When Calls the Heart Season 9 Episode Review

Newton lives!!! Huzzah!! (Cough!) I mean, yeah. I sure showed John Tinker. He knew he'd face my blogging wrath if he killed that horse. Glad he saw reason. 😂😉

Hi Hearties, and welcome to today's blog post! I hope you all are doing well and are enjoying your March so far. Time just flies, doesn't it?

This week's episode was another fun, and entertaining installment in Season 9. I laughed outright multiple times and really enjoyed the drama and the humor. I have a few little bones to pick (Which I'll explain as we go.) but all in all it was a fun episode, and surprise surprise... We didn't end on a cliffhanger.

    Well, let's dive right in!

Nathan & Mei

For convenience sake I'm grouping characters in two's, and since Mei seems meant for Nathan I'm pairing her in Nathan's section.

Wow, Nathan. You took quite the hit there. The poor guy just can't seem to avoid danger, can he? But I love the drama, so I'm not going to complain. Lol! I'm really enjoying Nathan's storylines this season, and his character in general. I love how happy, yet mischievous he is, and his humor just makes me laugh. The big stinker. Pretending not to remember Elizabeth. I have to admit he got me there for a second. He's such a big kid sometimes, and it's just hilarious. He's also fully taking advantage of his current situation. (Both with his accident and being rejected by Elizabeth.) His scene with Lucas and the ice cream... Absolutely hilarious. Lol! So much fun. He also can't quite help his snarky little comments. "Newton has always been a good judge of character..." Really, Mr. Mountie? Lol! So it's going to be like this for awhile he says... Yeah, that makes sense. Obviously he's still dealing with what happened between him and Elizabeth, and he's dealing with it in his own way. But how much better is it to see him being playful, than heartbroken? He's not being bitter with Elizabeth and Lucas, but wishing them well. He truly just wants Elizabeth to be happy, and that is noble.

I also find his behavior to be hilarious. Childish, but absolutely hilarious. Truly, his scenes were some of the best in the whole episode. The big question remains however.... Who hit him? I'm wondering if the Pinkertons or Wyman Walden have anything to do with this. I mean, it would make sense. They want to cause trouble, and one less lawman is definitely helpful. I guess we'll find out eventually.

Moving onto Mei... Guys, I know it's early. Like really early, to say too much about her character, but I have to admit I'm concerned about her possibly having a husband somewhere. I'm really, really hoping she was never really married to him, and just let people believe she was for some reason. Or maybe they divorced and she never told anyone. Either way it seems the writers are bent on dragging this storyline out, and possibly all season long. And it's going to drive me crazy. Lol! But that's part of the fun.

While I'm not incredibly fond of her character just yet, I can see she's a kind and caring person with a big heart. It was sweet that she was able to calm Newton, and it sure is good that someone is taking care of him. She seems like a kind woman, who has a complicated past. A past that very well may come speeding back into her present. I know she said she's not in trouble 'yet', but... that yet leads me to believe other wise. As always, we'll just have to wait and see.

Lee's New Job

Man... Lee just can't seem to catch a break can he? He would have made a wonderful mayor for sure, but you know... Maybe it's for the best that he didn't win. It could make for more interesting storylines, and I didn't want him to become business obsessed. When Abigail became mayor, she changed, and I didn't want the same thing to happen to Lee. However, he did in fact get a new job. He is now the Valley Voice's brand new Managing Editor! And I can only imagine the comedic scenes coming our way as Lee and Rosemary try and work together. Lol!

We got a small taste of that already and well... you saw how that worked out. :D But Rosemary was sweet to offer him the job, allowing him to forget his disappointment over losing the election and get excited about something new. I'm curious to see how this plays out.

The last thing I have to mention is the fact that John Tinker continues to make the Coulters mention the fact that they aren't parents. It's like he's saying, "I didn't forget about that." The question is whether he's going to do something about that storyline, and make them have kids eventually. I still think it's entirely possible for Rosemary to become pregnant, or for them to adopt a child. And that would be so sweet to see. I guess I'll just have to keep waiting, and see.

Hickam & Fiona

And the new mayor of Hope Valley is... Mike Hickam!! Wow! Who saw that coming? I had considered it a possibility, but if you read my last blog post I said Lee would become mayor. This is an interesting turn of events for sure, but you know... I think this is more interesting than if Lee had become mayor. This gives Lee some conflict and drama, and Mike? Well... He's got all sorts of problems coming his way. Lol!

Man, all the oil guys want to give up their stake in the company. I mean, I get it. The oil business is tough and very time consuming. And now Mike is going to be very, very busy. His reaction to becoming mayor was hilarious. Don't you love it when Ben Rosenbaum gets so animated and excited? It's going to be fun seeing how he handles the job. Mike is such a sweet guy, and wants the best for Hope Valley. What's also sweet is him and Fiona's friendship.

Those two are thick as thieves, and it's perfect. If they don't end up as a couple I will eat my hat. (My internet hat, anyway. ;) The chemistry between them is so fun, and they suit each other so well. And how sweet was it that Mike gave his shares in the oil company to Fiona? They both are so supportive, and encourage each other to follow their dreams. And Fiona finally did the right thing, and told Henry the truth about her being the one who brought in Smith. That had to be a huge weight off her shoulders, and in the end it did a lot of good. I'll now be interested to see how she handles being a true partner in the oil company. I'm also definitely curious where she was going when she jumped in that carriage with Smith, claiming she's not sure where she's going. Hmmm.... Interesting...

Henry & Smith

Nooooooooo!!! Hallmark you've done me dirty! How could you ever make Henry and Abigail reunite... off camera!!! (Throws self into a pillow and sobs.) One of the things I really, really, REALLY wanted to see was those two reunited. And while I'm not terribly upset about this, I am disappointed if I think about it hard enough. Lol! Either way... How adorable is it that Henry went and visited Abigail? I mean... so sweet! Although I have to ask, why all the talk about Abigail?

Is she going to come back, and Hallmark was just making that statement to throw us off? Is Henry going to appear in Season 2 of when Hope Calls, and Abigail will stay on as a regular? Or are things always going to be this way between Henry and Abigail? Lots of words about them, but never seeing them together? I'm not sure, and it's kind of sad.

But on a brighter note, Henry was absolutely hilarious when he came to the school house to tell the kids... "DON'T FIGHT!" Lol! I laugh out loud at that! The poor guy. You could see just how terribly uncomfortable he was in front of all those kids, and he probably went home kicking himself for the things he said. (Eat your vegetables? :D ) But he did it because he cares about Elizabeth and setting the right example, and in the end his few words seemed to have an impact on Cooper. (More on that rascal in a minute.)

The last thing I have to mention is Henry and Smith making amends in a way. While they aren't best friends in any way, things seem to be getting better, and it looks like Henry is staying with the oil company after all. He wants to fix his past since he can't seem to outrun it. I guess the question that remains is... What's going to happen next?

Unruly Cooper

Oh, dear... Now Joseph and Minnie are in a real pickle. The preacher's son doesn't want to go to church... ever. Now I personally have my own opinion on this whole matter and how it should be handled. In one sense I understand Minnie's point of view. We each have to work out our own faith, and we can't force someone to go to church, or believe in God. If she forces Cooper he may only rebel more. However... he's too young to make the decision that he's not going to church. If he were 16, then we'd have a different story here. But he's just a youngster, and is still under his parents' leadership.

So I agree with Joseph making him come to church, but I also understand Minnie's point of view as well. Honestly I feel like Joseph and Cooper just need to have a deep father and son talk. Something is going on with Cooper, and whether or not it's just a rebellious phase, or something deeper, I feel like him and his dad just need to talk about it. Like really talk, heart-to-heart. Man-to-man. I'm still curious if Minnie teaching school while Elizabeth was away, and Elizabeth in general has anything to do with this situation. Or maybe Angela has something to do with it. Maybe Cooper is jealous of all the time everyone spends with her, or something? Maybe he questions why God would allow his sister to be blind? I'm really not sure, but I'm very curious to see how this all turns out.

Anyhow, Angela seems to be having the time of her life... with Robert.... Allie's Robert. Oh boy, oh boy... I smell potential trouble. What happens if Allie comes back and finds that Robert like-likes Angela now? What if Nathan's daughter gets caught up in a triangle of her own? Lol! I feel like people could have mixed opinions about that, but I think it could be pretty funny actually. I guess we'll see.

Little Moments

Thank you Elizabeth for your contribution to Lucas' "Teacup Observation." Lol!

Wow. Lucas has actually been called out for his constant grand gesturing. Lol! I guess after 3 seasons of that, it was about time. :D I find it funny that John Tinker likes to call out things in the episodes that we Hearties just talk about normally online. And Lucas' constant grand gestures has been long talked about.

Elizabeth very sweetly informed him that basically, he doesn't have to lasso the moon to show her that he loves her. He can show how much he cares in little moments too. Walking her home. Holding her hand. Racing to the gas station... Lol! You know I think these two might actually be more happy, and playful together than (Gulp!) her and Jack were. BOOM! Yep, I said it. And if you've been reading my blog long you know how I feel about her and Jack. And while Erin Krakow and Daniel Lissing still have the most amazing chemistry, I have to admit that Lucas and Elizabeth seem to be more playful, and even more intimate than Jack and Elizabeth were.

I don't really remember Jack and Elizabeth holding hands, or Jack kissing her hand very much. Lucas and Elizabeth seem more intimate in that sense. Physical touch is definitely their love language. (Also the fact that there was an invisible brick wall between them for three seasons might play a little role in that too... ;)

Anyhow, I really liked that we got more scenes between them this episode. And as always they are just on cloud nine. So in love, sweet, and can't seem to help but kiss each other every time they see each other. (Darn, Ned... Lol!) I will say, however, that if I were to make a comment, it would be that I want them to have a storyline outside of their relationship. Right now things are just super happy, and romantic, which I think everyone really, really wanted to see. I mean, we were stressed out over this triangle for so long, it's about time we got some bliss. But moving on I want to see them both get storylines outside of their romance. Then they can tackle these problems together as a couple. I think it's a bit too soon for me to comment too much as we're only two episodes in. John Tinker may have just wanted to ease us into the season, and give us the romance we all wanted to see. You know, show just how happy and in love they are before hitting us with the drama.

But anyhow, it's great to see these two together as a couple, and all the romance that comes with that. It's actually funny how hard of a time Lucas has not making grand gestures. Lol! But it's fun and sweet. I also didn't know Lucas wasn't a regular church goer. Interesting. I also need to discuss a certain topic... The topic of whether or not Lucas hit Nathan with his car. I'll give you my answer right now.

No. No Lucas did not hit Nathan with his car. If there's one thing you should know about Lucas, it's that he has a big conscience. That would be eating him alive inside, and he never, ever would have left Nathan on the road unconscious. He would have come right out and said he did it. The guilt Nathan was accusing Lucas of having was about how things turned out with Elizabeth. The episode guide for this episode says as much. So... yeah. That's my bold opinion. Lol! But that scene between Lucas and Nathan was hilarious. Things are still tense between the two of them, which makes for really funny scenes. yet at the same time they are still capable of conversing, which is good. Even if Nathan is fully taking advantage of Lucas' kindness/guilt. :D

Overall, again I definitely enjoyed the episode. It was fun, happy, and lighthearted. But now that we're two episodes in I want to see some more tension and drama come into play. Problems rise, and people trying to solve them. You know. Typical WCTH stuff. Lol!

Thank you so much for reading! Feel free to share your thoughts on this episode below in the comments or on my Twitter page. (Just please no spoilers. Thank you. :) Have an amazing week! God Bless!

  1. Great recap! I agree with your thoughts on Cooper being too young to decide about church himself. I wonder how long this behavior of his will last.

Yes, to the more tension--especially with Lucas and Elizabeth. Give them more to navigate and more screentime. Hopefully it's coming.

Me, personally, I wasn't a fan of how Elizabeth brought up Lucas' grand gestures. I see the air balloon ride as seizing the opportunity of it being there. He's always done lots of little things too, so he already knows he doesn't have to always do things big. Just last episode, he walked her and LJ home; brought her the Valley Voice before work, and they were just going to have dinner at the saloon for their date...*shrugs*

I enjoy Nathan and Lucas' dynamics too. I hope they always keep that teasing rivalry between them, rather than getting too nice and tame.

    1. Thank you, Ann! I'm glad you enjoyed the blog post! I'm curious how long Cooper will continue to act out as well, and just why he is. He was so sweet in Season 8.

Yes, I hope more tension is coming soon for LucaBeth too. Not that I don't enjoy watching them so happy, but things can't be perfect all the time. And you made such an excellent point about Lucas already knowing how to do little things for Elizabeth. I should have thought of that. He really has already done such sweet, yet little things for her to show he cares. Very good point!

Lol! Yes, I love the tension between Lucas and Nathan! It's hilarious! I think eventually they could become friends, but I'm enjoying the way things are right now.

Thank you so much for reading, and taking the time to share your thoughts with me! Hope your day has been wonderful so far! God Bless!

  2. Loved your analogy and completely agree. I was sad we didn't get to see the end of Lucas and Elizabeth’s race, missed Golden opportunity for our desired PDA. Ned needs to be sent to the corner for interrupting the love birds.

    1. He learned the art of interrupting from Florence, as she's a real veteran in that area. Lol! And thank you! So glad you enjoyed the post, and I agree it would have been fun to see the end of that race. Have a wonderful day! God Bless!

  4. Love your review so much! You are a very talented writer! :) I have to say that, IMO, Lucas honestly hasn't done that many "grand gestures"... Like, Union City & the hot air balloon are the only truly Grand Gestures that he's done. I mean sure, he set up the lanterns for her, but the entire town got to enjoy them & the same goes for the library, he might've given it mainly for her benefit, but the entire town has enjoyed it.

    1. Thank you so much! You are so sweet and that means a lot to me. And you make an interesting point. Lately I've been seeing how Lucas already has done both grand and little things for Elizabeth, proving he does know how to do little things for her. Helping her with her coat, opening the door for her, walking her home, etc. He's just a really thoughtful guy, and is always finding ways to show her he cares. But not everything he's done has been grand.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me! I hope you're having a wonderful day! God Bless!
